How to play

  1. One mystery footballer a day. Same player for everyone. New one at midnight UK time.
  2. Ask anything yes or no: “Big six?” “Defender?” “90s?” “London club?”
  3. Ten turns. A question or a name guess uses one. Run out? Golden goal: one shot to name him.
  4. Name him in full, first name and surname.

How the ref decides

Tense matters
“Has he played in the Prem?” is his whole career. “Does he play in the Prem?” is right now.
Decades
“Did he play in the 2010s?” Yes if he played then at all. “Is he a 2010s player?” Only if most of his games came then. Add a club or league: “Arsenal in the 2010s?”
Sort of
Partly true. A striker who also played wide is a sort-of winger. A Welsh club in the English league is a sort-of English club.
Loans and few apps
Only ever there on loan? You’ll hear so. Under 25 league games for a club is only a few apps.
Positions
A holding midfielder is a midfielder, not a defender. Wingers are sort of midfielders and sort of forwards.
Trophies
He counts as a winner if he was in the squad and played in that competition that season. Ask “more than once?” for counts.
Places
“London club?” “North of England?” “Played in Italy?” Clubs count by where they’re based.
Names
First name and surname. Half a name is a yellow card: no turn lost.
Lifelines
Penalty: one free question or shot. Change shape: a random tile turned over (the club is where he played most games). VAR check: the ref explains a sort of. One use each, not in golden goal.
